Cantiñas w/ Fan (Int./Advanced)

This Fall, our Intermediate/Advanced dance class will set choreography to cantiñas (b*), exploring some of the lesser-known styles of the cantiñas family. We'll incorporate the abanico (fan) to develop a choreography that captures the lighthearted elegance and rhythmic character of this festive palo. 

*Cantiñas can mean:

a. A family of 12-beat cantes that are usually in the major key – these include alegrías, romera, mirabrás, caracoles, and others 

b. Any member of the family in (a), except alegrías 

c. Any member of the family in (a) that doesn’t have a name – i.e. anything except alegrías, romera, mirabrás, and caracoles; sometime this type of cantiñas is named after its creator – e.g. cantiñas de Pinini

Intermediate/Advanced level dancers have previous experience learning tablao style choreographies (Alegrias, Solea por Bulerias, etc.), know all four sevillanas choreographies, and have developed an at home practice in order to keep up with learning more complicated choreographies. Recommended: six or more years previous flamenco experience. 

Live guitar accompaniment (depending on availability) is included with the tuition.

9/22, 9/29, 10/6, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27*, 11/3, 11/10, 11/17, 11/24, 12/1, 12/8

*No regular classes Tuesday 10/27. Class will meet 7:00 - 8:00pm for special master classes with artists from La Velada.  Students enrolled in two weekday classes will meet from 7:00 - 9:00pm
